Robinson Wild were appointed by East Lindsey Distrcit Council as part of the project team tasked with bringing this site back into use as a visitor attraction and community asset.
Alford Five Sailed Windmill is a Grade I early nineteenth century mill in the town of Alford, Lincolnshire. Previously open to the public as a visitor attraction, it is a highly sensitive site including the original Bakehouse, Miller’s Cottage and a charming original pigsty. The mill has long played a vital role in Alford and forms a key part of the town’s identity, a factor which informed the proposals which sought to reinstate it as a focal point within the town.
Due to the sensitivity of the site, comprising multiple heritage assets, a sound understanding of the significance of both the individual buildings and as a collective was vital.
This assessment was undertaken alongside the recognition that the site needed to be reused in a flexible way in order to deliver a viable reuse scheme that would see the use of the site for years to come. The result was a heritage statement that delivered a sound understanding of the site alongside securing the aims of the client in achieving planning consent for a viable reuse scheme.
